exc1First visit point of the day “Petra tou Romiou” (Aphrodite’s Rock), the legendary birthplace of the goddess of fertility, Aphrodite. A stop here is without any doubt a must. This has been regarded as the gateway to Paphos for centuries!

 

 

We will then proceed on to Anogyra Village or Anoyira (both pronounced Annoy-ra), a beautiful, very traditional and picturesque spot.  Anogyra village is the carob centre of the island and here everyone will see thousands of carob trees while driving around the area. The village is in fact the home to the only Carob Museum on the island; it is also dedicated to the making of Pasteli (a kind of bonfire flavoured toffee) from carob juice.

exc4Next stop….. Omodhos Village, a traditional wine producing village located at an approx. height of 700m. A visit to the monastery of the “Holy Cross”, located in the centre of the village is a must. It is at this monastery where St. Helen left pieces of the Holy Cross back in the 4th century. The guests will be able to walk through the village square and the narrow streets of this picturesque village.

 

We will then drive through the pine-clad Troodos Mountains through wine country and mountain villages offering them panoramic views out to the north-west coast. It is a most exhilarating exexc5perience! 

Highlight is a visit to Cyprus’ most famous and richest monastery Kykkos founded in 12th century; the monastery houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which was apparently painted by St. Luke. The monastery also produces its own wines and spirits and is in fact a world in itself, being a very significant place of pilgrimage for the Greek Orthodox world.

Paphos founded in the 4th century BC, by the last king of the city kingdom of Palaepaphos. Thanks to its natural harbour, it soon became the capital of Cyprus during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and is featured on the World Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO since 1980.

Next visit that to the ‘Tombs of the Kings’, the impressive necropolis that is located just outside the walls, to the north and east of Pafos town. It was built during the Hellenistic period (3rd century B.C.) to satisfy the needs of the newly founded Nea Paphos. Its name is not connected with the burial of kings, as the royal institution was abolished in 312 B.C., but rather with the impressive character of its burial monuments. The ‘Tombs of the Kings’ was the place where the higher administrative officers and distinguished Ptolemaic personalities as well as the members of their families were buried. 

We will visit to the picturesque harbour, where the residences of the Roman capital are located, including that of the Roman Proconsu l with their outstanding floor mosaics recounting the stories from Greek Mythology, the House of Dionysos, Aion, Orpheus and the Villa of Theseus.

Away from the coast and in the vicinity of Paphos is where the Cypriot St. Neophytos dug out his cell, chapel and sepulchre, in the cliff face in the 12th century, as he had written and told us, giving us vital information of happenings of that century on the island. The guests will visit his hermitage in the so-called “Enkleistra” with exquisite 12th century frescoes. The 16th century monastery set in its serene location far from the madding crowd. 

The journey will continue up into the wine country of the Panagia region, where another beautiful monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Golden Pomegranate is located, Chryssorogiatisssa Monastery. With panoramic views over the vine-clad terraces, this monastery is famous for its icon, icon restoration and of course its wines, which are also sold on site.

A change of scene is to be expected as the guests will be driven up to the north-west coast towards Polis, Latchi and on to the legendary bathing place of Aphrodite, Loutra tis Aphroditis (Baths of Aphrodite), where the young Akamas, son of Theseus and Phaedra discovered her and fell in love with her. Thus, this marks the beginning of the Aphrodite Nature Trail on the Akamas Peninsula, an unspoilt beautiful nature reserve housing many endemic plants.

LEFKARA & NICOSIA-THE DIVIDED CAPITAL

First visit of the day, Lefkara village; a village situated at an altitude of 700m between Larnaca and Limassol. The village is divided into Upper and Lower Lefkara and iexc12s above all renowned for its exquisite and unique embroideries known as “Lefkaritika”. The tradition takes its roots from the medieval period and is still very much alive today. The women of the village and their daughters still sit on their doorsteps or in the shade of their balcony proudly embroidering, just as their ancestors did. The village is also known for its fine silverware and typical stone architecture. It is an ideal location to see local handicrafts on site, stroll and go shopping!

A visit to any capital is a must, but Nicosia is unique in that it is the only remaining divided capital in the world today.

The contrast of the old and new is most evident in Nicosia, with its modern architecture and old city within the Venetian ramparts of the16th century. Nicosia is a city boasting many important historical monuments and interesting museums. 

The first stop will be the Archaeological Museum; here there are artefacts going back to 7000 years BC.

A visit to the Byzantine Museum and Art Galleries will then follow; Archbishop Makarios III Foundation Cultural Centre has the largest collection of icons on the island, covering the period from the 9th to 18th century. The Art Galleries contain oil paintings, maps and lithographs.

The excursion will end at the ‘Laiki Gitonia’ the restored commercial quarter of the old city, where everyone will be able to have a stroll and visit the picturesque shops which sell traditional items.  Here we will also have the possibility to visit the “Green Line”, the area which presents the last divided capital of the world.

Patron god of Kourion and the woodlands was Apollo. His impressive temple grounds with therms and tree cult await everyone in the vicinity; he was known as Apollo Hylates.

We will then go on to visit the Greco-Roman theatre with its breath-taking coastal view and the early Christian mosaics in the House of Eustolios and the Kourion Basilica.

The guests will then be taken back to Medieval Cyprus, when the Knights of St. John had their Commandaria on the island, in Kolossi Castle with its sugar production centre.

The excursion ends with a visit to the old part of the Limassol and a visit to the Limassol Castle, which today houses Cyprus’ Medieval Museum with a complicated architectural history.
