The Role of Music – Rhythmic Classes in Complex Rehabilitation of Children with Mental Disabilities: A Master Class Including Elements of Diagnoses and Non-drug Therapies for Correction of Neurological Disorders in Children on the Autism Spectrum
Development of innovative scientifically-based programs for the children with mental disorders to improve their adaptation capacities to modern society is actual medical and social problem. The pilot interdisciplinary project for establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation between specialists in education, medical doctors and psychologists was approved by the Moscow Department of Correctional Education. The scientific staff of I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University together with the staff of teachers worked out the rehabilitation program with elements of music- rhythmic therapy.
Materials and methods: 64 pupils of primary and secondary special correctional school (range 8 – 14 years) with cognitive disorders, including autism, syndrome of hyperactivity and attention deficiency were examined. The Neuro – Energo-Cartography (NEC) method of visualization was used to study the level of cerebral metabolism. The scientific program included the course of non-drug therapy and special gymnastics for activation the “emotional and cognitive brain”. Teachers used methods of tale-therapy and dance-rhythm therapy. Musical – rhythmic classes in the traditions of the folk art were included into the correctional unit and were an important part of the educational program of the project. Adaptive physical exercises and folk art classes were aimed to correct and compensate
disrupted higher cerebral functions in the children.
Conclusion: Comprehensive rehabilitation of the children improved their clinical and emotional background, memory, cognitive functions and learning process. NEC-visualization marked the tendency in recovery of inter-hemispheric connections, normalization of the brain bioelectrical activity, the improvement of cerebral metabolism and neuroplasticity.
